"You cannot teach today the same way you did yesterday to prepare students for tomorrow."
John Dewey

In the K–12 classroom, I continuously studied and implemented Project-Based Learning (or PBL). I consider the incorporation of PBL an essential part of my music classroom. While combining traditional music performance settings with Project-Based Learning, I see students highly engaged and able to interact with music in new ways. In addition to a focus on music performance, students work on 21st century learning skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

Questions?
Questions about how Project-Based Learning looks in my music classroom? Let's connect to discuss how to implement PBL in your classroom.

Principles of Project-Based Learning

Inquiry-Based Projects
Students are presented a project that needs solving or explore a topic that makes them curious.

Authentic Learning Experiences
Students participate in experiences (performing, creating or analyzing music) that interests them and is authentic to their life. This may also take the form of working with musicians or visiting artists from outside the school.

Student Voice & Choice
Students are heard and valued within the classroom. Their opinions play an integral role in the learning that takes place.

Reflection

Student products, whether a final performance, composition, or hands-on project, go through many iterations. Students reflect on their own work as well as the work of their peers. Additionally, the students receive feedback from teachers, parents, and eventually, outside community members.

Public Presentation
Students share their finished products in a public performance or exhibition.
